85 | A tip on describing what you do

Are you someone who works in a healing or clinical field and struggles to explain what you do? You’re not alone. In this episode, we’ll tackle the common challenge of describing your professional role in a way that feels clear and authentic - especially in social settings.

I’ll share insights from a recent workshop and share a few reflections on how teaching in real time can spark new ideas, deepen understanding, and lead to meaningful connections.

If you missed the workshop on how to describe what you do, you can still access the recording ($25).

00:00:00.017 --> 00:00:04.297
Hi there. Welcome to In the Clinic with Camille. My name is Camille Freeman.

00:00:04.557 --> 00:00:07.957
I'm an herbalist and nutritionist. And in this podcast, I share little tips

00:00:07.957 --> 00:00:10.277
and tidbits that might be helpful for other practitioners.

00:00:10.937 --> 00:00:15.577
Today, I want to talk to you about a revelation that came to me when I was teaching

00:00:15.577 --> 00:00:17.497
a workshop not too long ago.

00:00:17.997 --> 00:00:22.497
So, this workshop was about how to describe what you do.

00:00:22.977 --> 00:00:26.537
And if you've been in clinical or healing work for any period of time,

00:00:26.657 --> 00:00:30.057
you will know that the answer to the question, oh, what do you do,

00:00:30.097 --> 00:00:32.517
is absolutely challenging.

00:00:33.337 --> 00:00:36.357
It seems like such an easy thing. You know, it's one sentence,

00:00:36.357 --> 00:00:40.037
usually, maybe two, maybe three at the very most that you need to come up with

00:00:40.037 --> 00:00:43.277
to answer that question. And a lot of us tend to fumble it.

00:00:43.717 --> 00:00:47.337
We don't always have a great answer. And sometimes we look back and we think,

00:00:47.477 --> 00:00:49.797
oh, that wasn't really the right thing to say.

00:00:49.977 --> 00:00:52.837
It didn't feel great coming. You know, it sounded too formal or it sounded a

00:00:52.837 --> 00:00:56.717
little weird or people looked at me and kind of backed away or whatever.

00:00:57.497 --> 00:01:02.437
So anyway, this is an ongoing issue that comes up. You know,

00:01:02.517 --> 00:01:03.817
I've been doing this work for 20 years.

00:01:03.997 --> 00:01:08.257
I've thought about it a lot, been mentoring other people for at least 10, maybe more years.

00:01:08.577 --> 00:01:11.497
And I've talked about this a lot. I have a lot of opinions. I have a lot of

00:01:11.497 --> 00:01:13.017
strategies and tips and things like that.

00:01:13.277 --> 00:01:17.437
So anyway, I was putting together this workshop, coming up with my slides,

00:01:17.697 --> 00:01:19.797
organizing my thoughts, etc., etc.

00:01:20.717 --> 00:01:23.437
And felt like, okay, I've got a lot of useful things to offer here.

00:01:24.017 --> 00:01:29.797
However, when I did the presentation, I had people there live.

00:01:29.957 --> 00:01:33.737
I always love it when people come live because there's questions and comments

00:01:33.737 --> 00:01:39.117
and things like that in the chat, which I like to watch as I am teaching and respond to in real time.

00:01:39.257 --> 00:01:43.777
I feel like it's more of a conversation and I can modify the class based on what's there.

00:01:44.417 --> 00:01:49.977
And one of the things I think is really cool about teaching is that sometimes people.

00:01:50.640 --> 00:01:53.920
At least for me, the way my brain is working when I'm teaching,

00:01:53.940 --> 00:01:58.840
I can see things or put pieces together in a way that I can't when I'm just

00:01:58.840 --> 00:02:01.320
thinking about teaching or preparing a class.

00:02:01.780 --> 00:02:05.360
And that happened during this class. Okay, so I was teaching it,

00:02:05.440 --> 00:02:08.900
and I'm seeing these questions come in, and I'm seeing people putting examples

00:02:08.900 --> 00:02:12.280
in the chat for us to give feedback on about how they might describe what they

00:02:12.280 --> 00:02:13.780
do after hearing some of my thoughts.

00:02:14.140 --> 00:02:18.760
And all of a sudden, I realized something that I hadn't realized before,

00:02:19.100 --> 00:02:25.360
which is that one of the reasons answering the question, what do you do,

00:02:25.400 --> 00:02:30.540
is so hard for people is because many of us do multiple things, right?

00:02:30.640 --> 00:02:35.720
Some of us are herbalists and we're nutritionists, or we are herbalists,

00:02:35.840 --> 00:02:39.260
but we do clinical herbalism and we run an apothecary and we do herb walks.

00:02:39.520 --> 00:02:43.920
Or maybe you are a nutritionist And you also have a job job that has nothing

00:02:43.920 --> 00:02:49.220
to do with nutrition because you are an analyst or you teach kindergarten or whatever else.

00:02:49.380 --> 00:02:54.240
So I was like, oh, I think one of the issues people are having,

00:02:54.440 --> 00:02:59.760
which was becoming clear to me by the chat questions in this Zoom presentation,

00:02:59.760 --> 00:03:05.100
is that people are trying to be really thorough in a way that if you were writing

00:03:05.100 --> 00:03:07.500
an about me page or a resume or something,

00:03:07.700 --> 00:03:11.180
you would absolutely want to include all the components of what you do.

00:03:11.180 --> 00:03:12.760
Your various trainings and your,

00:03:12.840 --> 00:03:16.180
you know, background in different professions and that sort of thing.

00:03:16.600 --> 00:03:19.820
And I was like, oh, this is a real hang up for people.

00:03:20.555 --> 00:03:27.055
Because if you try to describe everything you do in this one sentence in a casual social situation,

00:03:27.435 --> 00:03:30.575
either you're going to hog all the space because it's going to take you five

00:03:30.575 --> 00:03:36.915
minutes to fully flesh out each of these things, or all you have time to do

00:03:36.915 --> 00:03:42.215
is just list off a bunch of credentials or words that don't really mean a lot to people.

00:03:42.855 --> 00:03:46.675
And so it came to me as I was teaching, I was like, oh, I see.

00:03:46.775 --> 00:03:51.115
And I think I've known this, but it hadn't come into words or clicked together

00:03:51.115 --> 00:03:52.595
for me exactly in this way.

00:03:52.815 --> 00:03:58.215
Like, oh, I think a helpful and useful piece of advice would be don't try to

00:03:58.215 --> 00:04:01.735
describe everything you do in answer to this question in a conversation,

00:04:01.735 --> 00:04:05.295
on a website, in a written form. Amazing. Do what you want to do.

00:04:05.915 --> 00:04:10.775
But in a social setting, if somebody asks you what you do, my advice is to pick

00:04:10.775 --> 00:04:16.375
one piece of something that you do that is most relevant or potentially most

00:04:16.375 --> 00:04:19.575
interesting to the person you're talking to. So I'll give you an example.

00:04:21.755 --> 00:04:25.495
I'm actually a very good example of this because Bloom & Grow,

00:04:25.695 --> 00:04:26.975
right now, the main thing I do

00:04:26.975 --> 00:04:31.455
at Bloom & Grow is continuing education for herbalists and nutritionists.

00:04:31.675 --> 00:04:35.175
I have the Monday Mentoring Community of Practice, which I think of under the

00:04:35.175 --> 00:04:36.575
continuing education umbrella.

00:04:37.035 --> 00:04:41.695
And that's a big part of what I do. However, I also have my own clinical practice,

00:04:41.875 --> 00:04:44.475
where I work with fertility and menstrual health.

00:04:44.675 --> 00:04:47.795
I also run the free clinic, where we see people with all kinds,

00:04:47.935 --> 00:04:50.035
you know, who knows, whatever people show up with.

00:04:50.415 --> 00:04:55.575
And I also, a very small part of what I do is giving classes and presentations

00:04:55.575 --> 00:04:58.575
for, you know, outside organizations.

00:04:58.695 --> 00:05:01.295
Like, you know, we just did one for a bunch of social workers,

00:05:01.435 --> 00:05:04.595
and I sometimes teach at other schools or universities or things like that.

00:05:04.815 --> 00:05:07.575
So I have all these components of what I do. And if I tried,

00:05:07.715 --> 00:05:09.155
if somebody asked me, oh, what do you do?

00:05:09.235 --> 00:05:13.595
And I was like, oh, well, I run a small business where we offer continuing education

00:05:13.595 --> 00:05:17.015
programs for nutritionists and herbalists. And I have a clinical practice where I do this.

00:05:17.315 --> 00:05:20.795
And I sometimes I teach, like, I'm just going on and on and people are going

00:05:20.795 --> 00:05:23.735
to just drift away because I'm just sucking up too much.

00:05:24.552 --> 00:05:28.732
Too much energy, and it's hard for people to grasp onto any one thing enough

00:05:28.732 --> 00:05:29.972
to keep a conversation going.

00:05:30.432 --> 00:05:36.332
So what I do, and again, I hadn't really thought about consciously that I do

00:05:36.332 --> 00:05:40.632
this until I was teaching this presentation, but it is true that this is what

00:05:40.632 --> 00:05:44.112
I do, is that I will answer differently depending on who I'm talking to.

00:05:44.512 --> 00:05:48.292
So if it is just a sort of generic business setting, I will just say,

00:05:48.412 --> 00:05:51.812
I run a small business offering continuing education for herbalists and nutritionists.

00:05:51.812 --> 00:05:55.672
And if they want to ask more into it, amazing. And if not, you know, whatever.

00:05:56.292 --> 00:06:01.932
If I am in a clinical setting where people are, you know, most people are practitioners,

00:06:02.232 --> 00:06:05.132
where I'm around doctors or nurse practitioners or whatever else,

00:06:05.272 --> 00:06:08.952
I will say, you know, I'm a herbalist and nutritionist and I work with people

00:06:08.952 --> 00:06:11.172
who, you know, on fertility and menstrual health.

00:06:11.612 --> 00:06:15.812
So both of those things are true. It's not a full and complete picture of everything

00:06:15.812 --> 00:06:17.452
I do, but it doesn't need to be.

00:06:17.972 --> 00:06:22.772
Because again, I can throw additional information into the conversation if we keep talking.

00:06:24.032 --> 00:06:26.412
You know, I could say, I'm an author and I just wrote a book.

00:06:26.612 --> 00:06:29.072
There's a hundred things that I could say in response to what I do.

00:06:29.192 --> 00:06:33.392
And all I'm doing is just picking one, picking one or maybe two things to put

00:06:33.392 --> 00:06:38.672
into the conversation based on what I think would be most interesting or useful

00:06:38.672 --> 00:06:39.972
to the person I'm talking to.

00:06:40.552 --> 00:06:43.532
So anyway, that's something that came to me.

00:06:43.692 --> 00:06:47.252
And I thought this was a really cool example of how teaching,

00:06:47.252 --> 00:06:51.732
I feel like your brain is working a little bit differently when you're teaching something.

00:06:52.472 --> 00:06:57.332
And when you're in conversation, when you're in that energy of really being

00:06:57.332 --> 00:06:58.532
present with the people who are

00:06:58.532 --> 00:07:02.072
there and paying attention, sometimes when somebody asks you a question,

00:07:02.672 --> 00:07:05.672
it's been my experience that things will come out of my mouth that I'm like,

00:07:05.732 --> 00:07:10.292
oh, I know that to be true, but I've never said it before. I've never said it like that. before.

00:07:10.572 --> 00:07:14.132
And all of a sudden, again, it like clicks things into place.

00:07:14.312 --> 00:07:18.832
And that's one of the things I love so much about teaching is that it can bring

00:07:18.832 --> 00:07:22.732
out of us things that were there but buried.

00:07:23.252 --> 00:07:28.112
So anyway, I think the point of this podcast is number one, little tip for describing

00:07:28.112 --> 00:07:31.452
what you do, which is you don't have to say every single thing that you do in

00:07:31.452 --> 00:07:32.912
a conversational setting, just pick one.

00:07:33.192 --> 00:07:38.652
And if the others come up later, great. If not, you haven't lied, and it's no problem.

00:07:38.912 --> 00:07:42.132
So that's one piece of it. And then the other piece of it is just a comment

00:07:42.132 --> 00:07:46.572
or a reflection on how teaching can be a way to.

00:07:47.742 --> 00:07:52.902
Clarify our own philosophy and to bring forth things that we hadn't seen before,

00:07:53.042 --> 00:07:58.342
especially when you are doing live teaching, where you have the absolute privilege

00:07:58.342 --> 00:08:03.562
of interacting with people who are listening and engaging in what you're saying.

00:08:03.782 --> 00:08:07.682
So anyway, big shout out to everybody who came live to the workshop.

00:08:07.922 --> 00:08:10.142
Thank you so much. And people who come live to any of my workshops,

00:08:10.242 --> 00:08:13.022
I'm always so grateful, even though I know it's not always possible.

00:08:13.182 --> 00:08:15.542
And I love that recordings are available.

00:08:15.902 --> 00:08:18.902
But anyway, there's something really special about going live to things.

00:08:19.822 --> 00:08:23.282
And anyway, I hope that's helpful. Just wanted to share that with you today.

00:08:23.582 --> 00:08:26.742
If you have any questions, please reach out and let me know.

00:08:26.822 --> 00:08:30.322
I'd love to hear your feedback on the podcast. Or if there's anything you would

00:08:30.322 --> 00:08:34.442
like me to cover here, I would be more than happy to answer your question.

00:08:34.682 --> 00:08:38.102
You can go to intheclinic.com and leave a question.

00:08:38.422 --> 00:08:42.002
Or if you'd like to join my newsletter for practitioners, which goes out every

00:08:42.002 --> 00:08:47.562
Thursday, you can go to camillefreeman.com slash newsletter or just go to intheclinic.com

00:08:47.562 --> 00:08:49.462
and join the newsletter from there.

00:08:50.242 --> 00:08:52.322
All right, thank you for listening and I'll be back soon.
